Why come from El Prat to train BJJ in Viladecans?

Más de 200 alumnos eligen Ryutai Viladecans cada semana. Aquí está el por qué.

Real competition experience from Team Calderon

You train with instructors who have competed at the highest level: Catalonia championships, Spanish championships, European and world competitions. This experience is transmitted directly in every class. These aren't instructors who attend an annual seminar to learn new techniques; they're active competitors who test every movement on the tatami before teaching it. When you learn a rear-naked choke, you know this technique has worked in real competition, not just in YouTube videos. The qualitative leap between training with someone who has read about BJJ and training with someone who has gone through real chokes in a championship is enormous.

Specific BJJ and Grappling facility with 150m2

Ryutai II's tatami is the largest space specialized in BJJ in Baix Llobregat: 150 square meters dedicated exclusively to grappling arts. It's not a corner shared with boxing bags or a multifunctional space where you have to set up and take down equipment. It's a certified professional tatami, always ready, with adequate ventilation and differentiated zones for warm-up, drilling, and sparring. Most gyms in El Prat offer fitness with some BJJ class in a small room. Here the space is designed for grappling: you have room to move, to do drills with amplitude, to spar without bumping into other pairs. It's the difference between training BJJ as a supplement and training BJJ seriously.

Diverse community with over 200 students from across the region

At Ryutai you train with people from Viladecans, Sant Boi, Gava, El Prat, Castelldefels, even Barcelona. This diversity of styles, bodies, and experiences enriches every sparring session. Don't fall into the monotony of always training with the same 10 people; here every week you have different partners, new technical challenges, various sizes and weights. It's especially valuable for beginners: you learn to adapt your techniques to tall bodies, short, heavy, agile. And for competitors: you have enough level partners to do intense rounds. Approximately 30 percent of our students come from outside Viladecans. Many have formed informal groups to carpool, so the trip from El Prat can even become part of the pre-training camaraderie.

I've been coming from El Prat for three years and I've never considered changing gyms. I work at the airport and at first I thought the 15-minute drive would be a problem, but now it's part of my disconnection routine: I leave my shift, take the C-245, and arrive at the gym mentally prepared to train. The technical level of Team Calderon is on another level. I've tried other gyms close to home and there's no comparison. Here you learn real BJJ, with instructors who compete, who explain the 'why' of each movement, not just the 'how'. The 15 minutes are worth every second when you see your progress. Plus, I've met students from El Prat, Gava, Sant Boi... we have a WhatsApp group and even carpool some days. The specialized 150m2 tatami is amazing: you have space, it's always ready, you don't have to share it with other activities. For me, coming to Viladecans to train is one of the best decisions I've made. I'm a four-stripe blue belt and my goal is the purple belt here, with these people.

My son Peter is 12 years old and has been training here for two years. I also started six months ago in the adult classes. For us, the trip from El Prat is completely worth it. The instructors treat kids with a perfect mix of discipline and respect: they demand effort but never aggressively. Peter has improved his confidence, his discipline, and above all he's learned to fall and not get frustrated. At home he was a kid who gave up quickly if things didn't go well; now on the tatami he sees that he'll lose a hundred times before winning once, and he accepts it as part of learning. This has transferred to school, to homework, to everything. As a mother, seeing this change is priceless. And in adult classes, I'm discovering a sport I had never considered. I'm the least athletic student in class (I haven't done sports in years) and no one makes me feel out of place. I train with executives, with young people, with very physically fit people, and everyone helps me. Women are a minority, but growing, and the atmosphere is inclusive. The 15-minute drive is our parent-child time to talk about the day, and then we train together (him in kids' class, me in adults) and go home happy. For El Prat families looking for a shared and enriching activity, Ryutai is perfect.

I was working in El Prat's industrial zone in shifts, and when I started here I weighed 211 lbs. Today, after two and a half years, I weigh 183 lbs, I'm a blue belt and I compete regularly. BJJ has changed me physically, mentally, and socially. Physically: I lost 28 lbs without strict dieting, just training 4 days a week and eating with more common sense. BJJ is a brutal cardiovascular workout disguised as a technical sport: you finish classes drenched in sweat. Mentally: I've learned to manage frustration. The first months they pass over you constantly, and you either learn to accept it and persist, or you quit. I persisted. Socially: I've made real friends, people I hang out with outside the gym, who I go to competitions with, who I share much more than a hobby with. Regarding the trip from El Prat: yes, it's 15 minutes, but I do it with two partners I carpool with. Tuesdays and Thursdays I'd come to train even if I lived next door, so the 15 minutes aren't an impediment. In fact, the journey is my 'mental switch' between work and training. If you're looking for a gym in El Prat that has a generic BJJ class twice a week, there are some. But if you want to train BJJ seriously, with high-level instructors, with good tatami, with variety of partners, Ryutai is the best option for many miles around.

Frequently asked questions from El Prat students

Resolvemos tus dudas sobre venir a entrenar a Ryutai

By car, take the C-245 towards Viladecans and then the C-31. It's about 15 minutes in normal traffic conditions (8.3 km). During rush hour (6:00-7:00 PM) it can extend to 20-25 minutes. Parking: in the Ryutai II area (C/del Sol, 64) there are usually street parking spaces available. Many El Prat students opt to carpool: it's common for two or three students to meet at a point in El Prat (often the airport area or industrial zone) and make the trip together. This reduces fuel costs and makes the trip more pleasant. If you prefer public transport: L77 or L99 to Viladecans, then 10 minutes walking. About 35-40 minutes total. Most El Prat students come by car for schedule convenience.

Yes, we have several regular students from El Prat, as well as from Sant Boi, Gava, Castelldefels, and other towns in Baix Llobregat. Approximately 30 percent of our over 200 students come from outside Viladecans. Many El Prat students have formed an informal WhatsApp group to coordinate schedules, carpool, and organize to come to competitions together. On the tatami it doesn't matter where you're from; we're all part of the same Team Calderon. In fact, the diversity of origins enriches the atmosphere: you train with people from different towns, different jobs, different backgrounds, and everyone shares the same passion for BJJ.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want a fitness gym with some generic BJJ class, you'll probably find options in El Prat. But if you want to train BJJ seriously, with Team Calderon instructors who have competed at national and international level, with a specialized 150m2 tatami (the largest in Baix Llobregat), with a community of over 200 students at different levels, the 15 minutes are worth every second. Many of our El Prat students have tried closer gyms before coming here, and the quality difference made them stay. It's like comparing a neighborhood gym with a high-performance center: both have bags and tatamis, but the experience is nothing alike. Plus, many students turn the journey into part of their disconnection routine between work and training.

Yes, many El Prat students work at the airport or in the industrial zone in shifts and combine perfectly. Ryutai II (MMA, BJJ, Grappling) opens Monday to Friday from 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM. If you finish your afternoon shift around 6:00-6:30 PM, in 15-20 minutes you're at the gym and can join the 7:00 PM or 8:00 PM class. On Saturdays we train from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, ideal if you do weekend shifts or simply want longer sessions. We have students who do morning shifts at the airport and come in the afternoon, students with split shifts who organize to come 3-4 days a week, and even some with rotating shifts who adapt their training days according to their work schedule. It requires initial organization, but then it becomes routine. Ryutai's schedule flexibility helps a lot.

Exactly the same as for any other new student, with the advantage that if you're coming from El Prat you've probably already made the effort to search for local alternatives and decided to try Ryutai based on its reputation. The free trial class lasts one hour and follows the normal class structure: BJJ-specific warm-up (shrimping, breakfalls, mobility), technical teaching of a movement or position (for example, a basic throw or a mount escape), drilling the technique with a partner, and often some light sparring (controlled rolling) at the end. You don't need previous experience: instructors adapt explanations to your level. Wear comfortable clothes (long pants and a t-shirt without zippers or buttons), and come 10-15 minutes early to fill out the registration form and see the facilities. After class, the instructor will discuss available schedules, training packages, and we'll answer any questions. Many El Prat students come accompanied by a friend to do the trial class together, which is always welcome. Book your trial class by contacting 677 71 47 99 or on Instagram @ryutai_viladecans.
